What to Bring to Your Wedding Dress Appointment: Our Essential Bridal Tips

Your wedding dress appointment should be one of the most exciting parts of your wedding journey! It’s the moment you get to start exploring beautiful gowns, discover different styles and, hopefully, find the dress you’ve always dreamed of – or something you really didn’t expect, that we’ve suggested for you!

Whether you’ve been saving hundreds of dresses on Pinterest or are starting your search with a completely open mind, a little preparation can make all the difference.

If you’re visiting our bridal boutique near Brentwood, Essex, we’ve put together our essential tips to help you get the very most out of your bridal appointment.

1. Bring the Right People

This is probably one of the most important things to consider before your appointment.

We know how tempting it can be to invite everyone you love, but our advice is to keep your bridal entourage small and choose the people who know you best.

Bring the people who will make you feel comfortable, confident and supported. Your mum, sister, best friend or bridesmaid might be the perfect people to share this special experience with.

We kindly suggest not bringing large groups of bridesmaids, as too many conflicting opinions can become stressful for the bride. Too many different opinions can sometimes make choosing your dress feel overwhelming. You want to enjoy the experience and feel confident in your own decisions.

Remember, it’s your wedding dress, your moment and ultimately, should only be your decision!

2. Wear the Right Underwear

You don’t need to buy lots of special bridal underwear before your appointment, but wearing the right underwear can make trying on dresses much easier.

We recommend:

  • Nude or skin-tone seamless underwear.
  • A strapless bra, if you feel more comfortable wearing one.
  • Underwear that fits well and makes you feel confident.

Neutral underwear is particularly helpful when trying on lighter-coloured wedding dresses, as it is less likely to show through delicate fabrics.

Don’t worry if you aren’t sure whether you need a bra. Many wedding dresses have built-in support, and your bridal consultant can help you work out what works best with each style.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout your appointment.

3. Bring Photographs of Wedding Dresses You Love

Have you been scrolling through Pinterest, Instagram or bridal magazines saving all your favourite wedding dresses?

Bring those pictures along!

We absolutely love seeing the styles that have caught your eye. They give us a starting point for understanding your bridal vision and the details you are naturally drawn to.

You might love:

  • Romantic lace and delicate detailing.
  • Simple, elegant satin gowns.
  • Beautiful off-the-shoulder necklines.
  • Statement sleeves.
  • Dramatic ballgown skirts.
  • Modern, minimalist silhouettes
  • Fitted basque waisted wedding dresses

Even if your inspiration photographs feature completely different styles, that’s absolutely fine!

They help us understand what you like, and we can use our experience to suggest dresses you might not have considered.

And remember, photographs are inspiration rather than a strict shopping list. Sometimes the dress you fall in love with is the one you least expected!

4. Tell Us About Your Wedding Venue

One of the first things we love to know is where you’re getting married! And when. The weather and season can play a big part in your final decision.

Your venue can tell us so much about the overall feel of your wedding and can help us understand the look you’re hoping to create.

Are you planning:

  • A romantic countryside wedding?
  • An elegant country house celebration?
  • A beautiful church wedding?
  • A glamorous hotel wedding?
  • A relaxed outdoor or destination wedding?

If you have photographs of your venue, bring those along too!

Knowing your venue, wedding date and general wedding style helps us make suggestions that complement your plans.

Of course, there are no rules when it comes to choosing your wedding dress. The most important thing is finding something that feels completely you.

5. Come With Any Questions You May Have

Your bridal appointment is the perfect opportunity to ask us anything about finding, choosing and ordering your wedding dress.

You might be wondering:

  • How far in advance should I order my wedding dress?
  • How long will my dress take to arrive?
  • Can I buy my wedding dress off the peg? (yes you can)
  • When should I arrange my alterations?
  • Can I try on different veils and accessories?
  • What happens once I’ve found my dress?
  • Can you help me decide which silhouette suits me?

No question is too small, and you should never feel worried about asking.

We want you to feel informed, comfortable and excited about every stage of your bridal journey.

6. Come Ready to Say Yes (If You Find The One!)

Our advice is to come to your bridal appointment with an open mind, but also with the possibility that you might find the one!

While we never want you to feel rushed or pressured into making a decision, it’s worth being prepared in case you fall head over heels for a dress.

This is particularly important if you’re trying on off-the-peg wedding dresses. Unlike made-to-order gowns, off-the-peg dresses are often limited stock, meaning that once they’re sold, they may not be available again.

It’s also worth remembering that bridal designers can discontinue wedding dress styles and collections at any time. A dress you’ve fallen in love with today may not necessarily still be available if you decide to return a few weeks later.

If you think you’ve found your dream dress, we’d always recommend discussing availability, ordering timescales and next steps with your bridal consultant before leaving your appointment.

So, if you have a particular wedding dress budget in mind and you’re ready to find your dream gown, come prepared to make that exciting decision!

And remember, there’s absolutely no pressure. We want you to be completely happy and confident when you say yes to your dress.

7. Most Importantly, Come With an Open Mind!

Our final piece of advice is to relax, enjoy yourself and be open to trying different styles.

You may arrive convinced you want a fitted lace gown and discover that you absolutely love a full, romantic skirt.

Or perhaps you’ve always imagined a simple dress but find yourself falling for something with beautiful intricate detailing.

Trust your bridal consultant, enjoy trying different designs and don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

Sometimes the dress that makes you feel incredible is the one you never imagined wearing.

And yes, you can fall in love with the first dress in the first shop. There are no rules as to where in the journey you will find your perfect wedding dress!

8. Feel free to wear make up, but we kindly ask for no fake tan!

You definitely want to feel and look your best when trying on your potential future wedding dress. Facial make up and light foundation is not a problem. Unfortunately fake tan can come off onto our beautiful dresses, so we do ask brides not wear fake tans or tinted body lotions to their appointment.
